Forward Ability Support (FAS), a not-for-profit organisation supporting people with spinal cord injuries, operates in a uniquely demanding environment – emotionally, mentally and operationally. Leaders are required to balance deep care and connection with the realities of growth, regulation, and sustained organisational performance.
While purpose is a powerful driver, it does not eliminate fatigue. FAS leaders needed practical ways to protect their energy, regulate pressure, and make clear decisions — while staying deeply connected to the mission that matters most.
About the program
Rather than asking leaders to give more, the program focused on building the capacity to sustain impact — by strengthening physical foundations, sharpening mental fitness, and establishing a shared operating rhythm across the leadership team.
The Leadership Capacity Program delivered clear improvements across all areas of wellbeing and resilience:
– 20% lift in overall wellbeing (LiveLife Score) – shifting the team from coping to performing
– 15% improvement in Mental Fitness – better emotional regulation and clearer thinking
– 11% improvement in resting heart rate – stronger recovery and steadier performance
– 3-year reduction in Biological Age – more efficient physical functioning
Beyond the metrics, leaders reported feeling more grounded, more connected and better equipped to make decisions in high-pressure, mission-critical contexts.
In emotionally demanding environments, leadership effectiveness is shaped as much by energy, recovery, and clarity as it is by intent. Strengthening these foundations reduced cognitive load and enabled leaders to show up with greater consistency, presence, and confidence.
What other leaders can learn
– Purpose doesn’t replace recovery – even mission-driven work requires boundaries
– Shared language stabilises culture – the Team Code unified expectations
– Wellbeing amplifies impact – emotionally demanding work requires strong physical foundations
– Leadership clarity reduces cognitive load – making space for better decisions and better care
FAS proved that purpose and performance reinforce each other when leaders invest in their capacity.
This program has been energising for our leadership team. We’ve gained clarity, confidence, and the tools to work smarter together. The improvements in health and performance metrics reflect what we feel every day – more focus, more connection, and more capacity to lead.”
