Every late night you’ve ever pulled went on a tab.
The red-eye flights. The third coffee. The “I’ll sleep when things slow down.” You thought you were getting away with it because you kept functioning. But as Dr Jemma King puts it, mother nature is like the mafia. She always comes back for what you’ve stolen. The interest shows up as the meeting where you snapped, the 3am ceiling stare, the burnout you saw coming and scheduled around anyway.
Jemma isn’t a scientist who watches people nap in a lab. She’s a stress researcher who spent a decade inside Australian Special Operations Command, the Olympic swim team and the boardroom, measuring what sleep debt does to people whose decisions actually matter. Her data flipped an entire culture: soldiers who wore sleep deprivation as a badge of honour started competing over recovery, because a sleep-deprived teammate is as dangerous as a drunk one. Read that sentence again, then think about your Tuesday.
In this episode she introduces the librarian in your brain who wakes you at 3am and what she’s trying to file, the genetic outliers who really can run on four hours (statistically, you’re not one), and the question hiding under every burnout: why do you believe everyone else’s needs are worth more than your sleep?
Time to settle the tab. Jemma’s new book is Sleep First: Sleep Smarter, Think Sharper and Feel Better.
